The most common thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family, PET Polyethylene Terephthalate, is commonly used in creating plastics for the liquid and food industry, in fact about 30% of global demand for Polyethylene Terephthalate is used for bottle production.
PET plastic is comprised of polymerized parts of ethylene terephthalate. Formed from repeating (C10H8O4) units, PET is a semi-crystalline material that can be transparent, opaque, or white.
Uses of PET:
– Plastic bottles & Food Packaging are made from PET
-Thermal Insulation
-Carrier or Backing for magnetic tapes or pressure sensitive adhesive tapes
-As a substrate in thin film solar cells
-As a 3D printable thermoplastic – PETG form
The first patent for PET was provided to John Rex Whinfield, James Tennant Dickson, and the company that they worked for, Calico Printers’ Association in England and E.I. Dupont de Nemours in Delaware.
In the next decade, it was first trademarked as Mylar. Dupont Teijin Films US is the current owner of the trademark. In 1973 the first Polyethylene terephthalate PET bottle was patented by Nathaniel Wyeth. It is known by various names depending on where you are in the world. Terylene is it’s brand name in the United Kingdom, and in Russia it is branded as Lavsan. In the United States it is sometimes found as Dacron.
