About Government & Defense Plastics

Governments use plastics in the construction of schools, libraries, and municipality buildings because it is durable, lightweight, and recyclable. Not only is plastic cheaper than other materials like steel and concrete, but it also has a longer lifespan which means that it will not need to be replaced as often. Plastic barriers, partitions, and shields can be used to protect employees from sound, disease, and bodily injury. Plastics are also used in defense applications for ballistics, radomes, and avionics.

We Carry the Highest Quality Impact & Bullet Resistant Plastics

LEXAN™ polycarbonate (PC) is 200x stronger than glass yet significantly lighter, making it a perfect choice for many ballistic and non-ballistic grade glazing applications, including counterline systems, transaction windows, armored vehicle glazing, and forced entry and standard architectural glazing. Insulgard Security Products, a division of Polymershapes, offers a range of solutions for bandit barriers and counterline systems for use in government buildings to protect employees and assets. Many products are shipped completely fabricated and ready for easy installation, or Insulgard can take charge of the entire project from design to installation and provide a custom solution.

Among The Industry’s Most Knowledgeable Professionals

Many government contracts require ISO certification to ensure products are manufactured to high standards. Additional AS certification may be necessary for aerospace applications, while defense applications must comply with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Polymershapes has over 75 years of experience and a network of world-class suppliers to provide the high-quality materials you need that meet all government specifications and compliances. Our sales and customer service team is among the industry’s most knowledgeable. Contact us today to discuss the best performance plastic for your government or defense project.

Applications

ADA Signage

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) created very specific guidelines for signage in many public buildings. Acrylic is often used for ADA compliant signage because it is durable, weather-resistant, cost effective, and available in a wide range of colors. Braille can also be added to acrylic using a few different techniques.

Armored Vehicle Glazing

For the best in armored vehicle protection, LEXAN HLG5 is a laminated ballistic grade polycarbonate engineered to resist bullets and other physical attacks without sacrificing optical clarity.

Clear Boarding

Doors and windows of abandoned buildings can be covered with polycarbonate instead of wood to prevent drawing attention to the vacancy and retain curb appeal. Polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable and won’t rot or swell, so it’s unlikely it will need to be replaced. Once it’s no longer needed, polycarbonate can be recycled.

DOT & Construction Signage

Road signs are often made from aluminum composite material (ACM), which pairs durable aluminum with a moisture-resistant polyethylene core. This material can last for years with minimal maintenance. Reflective vinyl is often applied to improve visibility.

Face Shields

Face shields provide eye protection from infectious material (such as COVID-19) or physical damage from debris or chemicals, without obscuring vision. LEXAN polycarbonate is strong and won’t shatter, is easy to clean and disinfect, and is available with an anti-fog coating.

Holsters & Sheaths

Boltaron is a thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride that is commonly used for gun holsters and knife sheaths because of its durability, imperviousness to sweat and oil, and comfort.

Impact Resistant Glazing

Polycarbonate and acrylic are excellent alternatives to glass windows, especially where safety or vandalism is a concern. Both materials weigh significantly less than glass, are impact and shatter resistant, and are easy to fabricate. If plastic windows do need to be replaced, they are easy to recycle. Specialized grades are available depending on the requirements of your glazing project. LEXAN MARGARD MR10 contains a UV and scratch resistant coating that also resists chemicals such as spray paint, making it easy to clean away graffiti. When forced entry is a concern, Polymershapes has a portfolio of bullet-resistant glazing materials.

Partitions, Dividers, & Barriers

Whether you’re looking to protect employees from disease, physical attack, or provide a visual or sound barrier, performance plastics offer many transparent and opaque options. Polycarbonate provides transparency and near unbreakable strength and is an excellent noise dampener. Acrylic offers additional scratch resistance and is available in a variety of opacities and colors, making it perfect for privacy screens.

Radomes

Since radomes protect radar antennas, they must be made of a weatherproof material that won’t block or interfere with radio waves. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate are commonly used because of their dialectic properties, strength, weatherability, and low water absorption, though polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) may be chosen when harsher environmental conditions are expected.

Riot Shields

Polycarbonate is commonly used for riot shields as it is lightweight, transparent, and very impact resistant. Ballistic and non-ballistic grades are available.

Snowplow Blades

Metal snowplow blades are loud and can damage sidewalks and pavements. UHMW-PE makes an excellent alternative because this wear and abrasion resistant plastic quietly conforms to the surface being plowed without causing damage. It absorbs impact without breaking, and its chemical resistance means it doesn’t corrode from exposure to salt or other de-icing chemicals.

Transaction Windows

Polycarbonate, acrylic, and fiberglass can all be used for transaction windows, counterline systems, and other bandit barrier solutions to protect employees from theft or aggression. Both bullet-resistant and non-ballistic options are available. These transparent materials are visually appealing and provide physical protection without obstructing visibility. Insulgard Security Products, a division of Polymershapes, overs a range of customizable and easy-to-install solutions.

Transit Shelters

Not only do bus shelters have to withstand constant exposure to the sun and all sorts of bad weather, but they are also often the target of vandalism. For a durable, UV and flame-resistant material, choose LEXAN MARGARD™ MR10 polycarbonate, which is virtually unbreakable and features a chemically resistant coating which makes it easy to clean away spray painted graffiti.
