Plastic Products for Transportation Applications

Products for Weight, Compliance, & Efficiency

About Transportation Industry Plastics

Whether you’re talking trains, buses, cars, trucks, boats, or RVs, the transportation industry demands the best in safety and efficiency. When used in structural, mechanical, or aesthetic applications, performance plastics offer a significant reduction in weight over traditional materials that can help you travel further for less money while also limiting your environmental impact. Reducing vehicle weight decreases energy consumption and emissions while placing less wear on brakes and tires, decreasing your carbon footprint in several ways. Plastics can also be engineered to meet the challenges of any industry. Polymershapes carries materials that meet all flame, smoke, and toxicity (FST) standards for the bus and rail industry, as well as UV-stabilized marine-grade plastics designed to withstand constant exposure to water and sunlight.

High Performance Plastics Are Outperforming Traditional Materials

Performance plastics can be found throughout any vehicle. See-through plastics such as POLYVANTIS’s LEXAN™ polycarbonate are significantly stronger than glass and virtually shatterproof at a fraction of the weight, and can be used in many fritted and non-fritted window and windshield applications, as well as driver security enclosures and even armored vehicle glazing. Specialized grades have been developed for many interior components that offer a wide range of colors and patterns while meeting all industry regulations. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE)’s low friction and high wear resistance make it an excellent choice for truck liners, wear strips, and even snowplow blades. And nylon, acetal, and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) are often used for bearings, gaskets, and many mechanical components.

Applications

Armored Vehicle Glazing

LEXAN offers multi-layer ballistic grade polycarbonate meant to resist bullets and physical attack to protect armored vehicles without sacrificing optical clarity.

Driver Security Glazing

See-through plastics such as acrylic and polycarbonate can be used to separate and protect bus drivers or train conductors. Whenever you need a transparent barrier or enclosure, plastics combine light weight with high strength, and they won’t shatter like glass, which protects passengers and drivers alike from sharp edges. Polycarbonate offers higher impact strength, while acrylic tends to be more scratch resistant.

Housings & Shrouds

Certain plastics with insulating properties can be used in housing and shrouds to safely protect important vehicle components, such as fans, air conditioners, electrical systems, and even a ship’s anchor. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is commonly used in many electrical applications because it’s flame-retardant and fairly heat resistant, with low electrical conductivity and high impact strength.

Interior Components & Wall Panels

Materials used in mass transit applications must meet strict FST requirements to ensure passenger safety. There are many specialized plastics engineered for the industry that offer lightweight and aesthetically pleasing options for interior walls and components. LEXAN H6506 and LEXAN DH65011(S) are polycarbonate/ABS blends that offer high stiffness and several decorative colors. Simona’s Boltaron® 4800 is a thermoplastic alloy designed for mass transit applications with an infinite range of colors and a wide selection of textures for endless design possibilities.

Mudflaps

Mudflaps protect the body and undercarriage of trucks and other vehicles from mud, water, salt, and debris that tires encounter on the roadway. Polypropylene offers solid impact and chemical resistance. For the most heavy-duty mudflaps, polyurethane is often chosen for its superior durability and flexibility.

Seating

On mass transit vehicles, Bolatron 4800 is often used for seat backs, and may be thermoformed into a composite with coring materials to reduce weight. Both materials meet all FST regulations. On marine vessels, Boatboard HDPE is often used in seating components because of its rugged performance in wet and sunny environments. Foam PVC is often used for seat cushions, as it is lightweight with good screw retention and can withstand harsh marine conditions.

Snowplow Blades

UHMW-PE makes excellent snowplow blades because this wear and abrasion resistant plastic conforms to the surface being plowed without damaging the pavement. It doesn’t absorb moisture and its chemical resistance means it won’t be broken down by salt or other melting chemicals. It absorbs impact without breaking and is quieter than metal blades. UHMW-PE snowplows are even recommended by the FFA for use at airports because they don’t leave behind metal shavings or damage lights or runways.

Transit Shelters

Transit shelters much be tough enough to withstand abuse from both weather and mankind. LEXAN MARGARD™ MR10 polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable and features a proprietary scratch and chemical resistant coating which makes it easy to clean away spray painted graffiti. It’s also UV and flame resistant, so it won’t catch fire or yellow in the sun.

Truck Liners

From dump trucks to pick-up trucks, plastic liners can protect truck beds from damage and make unloading easier. HDPE and Polypropylene are both smooth, durable, and easily recycled lining materials. For industrial trucks that hold highly abrasive cargo, UHMW-PE offers better wear properties for longer-lasting performance and a slick, low-friction surface that promotes material flow for easy unloading.

Vehicle Upfitting

Vehicles may be upfitted to improve efficiency, provide protection, or equip them for a specialized task, such as conversion into a food truck. Plastics can be used for door cladding, interior wall cladding, flooring, or shelving to lower weight and fuel consumption. Plastic won’t rot or splinter like wood and is easy to fabricate and install. HDPE is an excellent choice for shelving and is available in a cutting board variety. ABS may be selected for its insulating properties. Bubble-X polypropylene offers a lightweight, durable, and cost-effective option for wall cladding and shelving.

Vehicle Wraps

Vehicle wraps are adhered to the outside of a car or truck to transform its appearance or add branding. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), often referred to as vinyl, is the material of choice because its excellent printability, durability, and flexibility allow for vivid graphics and flawless installation.

Wear Pads & Strips

Trucks, RVs, and trains use wear pads, strips, and plates to guide belts or protect mechanical components. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) provides solid chemical and corrosion resistance and a low-friction surface and may even be available in a recycled grade. When better wear properties are required for longer-lasting parts, UHMW-PE may be preferable, and is also available in a recycled grade.

Windshields & Windows

LEXAN polycarbonate is lightweight and very impact resistant, making it a safe and energy efficient alternative to glass windows and windshields. Transportation grades have anti-fog and anti-UV properties, as well as a mar-resistant coating to prevent scratching. LEXAN MARGARD FMRT102 is a formable transportation grade for non-UV intensive windshields. LEXAN MARGARD FRA25C (dual glazed) and FRA460 (single glazed) were engineered for rail applications. If desired, a black border and frit can be digitally printed directly onto a polycarbonate sheet before fabrication, or painted on afterwards.
