There are a variety of reasons for using plastics – like PAI, ECTFE, PTFE, PEEK, PPSU, PVC-Acrylic, and much more – in aerospace applications, particularly airplanes.
PI (Polyimide)
Westlake
About PI (Polyimide)
PI (Polyimide), is an imidized material with a continuous use temperature range of up to 580° F (304° C). It is categorized as an extreme performance material, and offers excellent heat resistance, lubricity, dimensional stability, and chemical resistance.
Polyimide is ideal for environments that must endure extreme temperatures, and provide durability while reducing weight. Polyimide material is lightweight, flexible, and relatively easy to machine. It does not produce significant outgassing even at high temperatures. PI is a better price value for applications that require higher temp ratings than PAI and do not require the extraordinary heat requirements of PBI.
Polymershapes can meet your PI needs with sheet, rod and tube, in a variety of shapes and sizes, from leading suppliers including Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials (formerly Quadrant EPP), makers of Duratron® PI. Applications & Industries
Semiconductor
A wide variety of engineered plastics are used in the manufacturing of semiconductors, which are also known as microchips. Semiconductor manufacturing requires extreme precision and stability to prevent costly part failure.
Electrical
Industrial and electronic equipment requires heat resistance, low conductivity, and insulating properties to promote safety in the electrical industry.
Related & Associated Products
PEEK (Polyetheretherketone)
PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) is a unique engineering thermoplastic offering high temperature resistance, toughness, rigidity, and creep resistance. It is resistant to a wide range of solvents, making it an excellent material for use in a wide spectrum of applications where thermal, chemical and combustion properties are critical to performance.
PBI (Polybenzimidazole)
PBI (polybenzimidazole) such as Duratron® from Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials, features the highest mechanical properties of any plastic above 400°F as well as the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion and highest compressive strength of all unfilled plastics.
PAI (Polyamide-imide)
PAI (Polyamide-imide) is an imidized thermoplastic material, with a continuous use temperature range of up to 500° F (260° C).
