Plastic Products for Recreation Applications

Products for Safety, Weatherability, & Impact

About Recreation Industry Plastics

From a day at the playground to riding a rollercoaster at an amusement park, recreational activities require equipment that delivers consistently high performance and safety. Unlike many traditional materials, performance plastics won’t splinter or crack, succumb to weight or shock, or degrade from UV exposure. They’re also light weight, shatterproof, and resistant to weather, fire, and most chemicals. In addition to their durability, plastics used in recreational applications are easy to fabricate and thermoform and are available in a rainbow of aesthetically appealing colors.

Modern playground equipment not only gives kids an opportunity to burn excess energy, but also develop motor skills with a variety of engaging activities. Playgrounds made from shock and impact resistant materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) can stand up to years of outdoor play. Polymershapes partners with leading manufacturers like SIMONA to offer a vast array of color options with materials like Polytone®, which can be routed to expose a different color core, allowing design flexibility. Plastics also mask scratches and wear better than painted materials because their color is consistent throughout.

A Wide Selection of Products for Recreational Vehicles

For the truly adventurous types, ATVs or all-terrain vehicles are an exhilarating hobby! Or maybe a more leisurely round of golf is more your pace? Regardless, golf carts, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, and off-road vehicles are made safer and more efficient by swapping traditional materials like metal or glass with performance plastics. LEXAN™ polycarbonate windshields and windows are virtually unbreakable, protecting drivers and passengers without sacrificing optical clarity. Engineering plastics, such as acetal or TIVAR® ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) are excellent options for parts such as bearings, gears, or skid plates, offering high impact strength and wear resistance.

Applications

Amusement Park Rides

Amusement park rides utilize several different plastics. HDPE is a durable, weatherable, long-lasting material often used for seating. UHMW-PE is its stronger polyethylene cousin that is used for an array of machine components, such as bushings or bearings. Polyurethane’s uniquely high temperature resistance and strength make it a common candidate for roller coaster wheels.

ATVs & Snowmobiles

ATVs, snowmobiles, and other recreational vehicles incorporate plastics in their designs to reduce weight and improve safety. HDPE and opaque polycarbonate are commonly machined into body panels, because their strength and flexibility make accidents less hazardous. ABS is often formed into lightweight dashboards and instrument panels. And LEXAN polycarbonate is used for shatterproof windows and windshields that combine safety with visibility.

Canoes & Kayaks

While canoes and kayaks were traditionally made from wood, HDPE has become a go-to material because it is far more durable and able to withstand harsher rapids. Unlike wood, HDPE won’t rot or swell, requires virtually no maintenance, and is available in a variety of bright and attractive colors.

Dasher Boards & Hockey Shielding

Skating and hockey rinks are enclosed by dasher board systems to protect spectators from flying pucks or colliding players. Metals were traditionally used for the lower layer, but can dent or crack upon impact, causing a major safety hazard. HDPE is becoming such a common replacement that it’s often referred to as puck board. In addition to improving safety, HDPE dasher boards can reduce costs and maintenance thanks to their durability and impact resistance. The upper glazing is often made from polycarbonate, which is transparent but virtually shatterproof, allowing fans a safe yet unobstructed view of the game.

Outdoor Signage

HDPE is a vibrant, cost-effective solution for outdoor signage. Available in a wide variety of colors, it offers impact, abrasion, and UV resistance to retain its appearance in high traffic outdoor areas. Its chemical resistance makes it difficult to stain and easy to clean.

Picnic Tables

Recreational picnic tables are traditionally made of wood, which tends to splinter and rot. Newer table manufacturers are switching to HDPE, which offers a significantly longer lifespan, better durability, and no more rotting or splintering. SIMONA’s Polygrain® HDPE is machined with a woodgrain finish, offering the appearance of wood with all the performance benefits of HDPE.

Playground Equipment

Traditional playground equipment is generally made of wood and metal, which tend to splinter, rot, rust, or degrade with age. SIMONA’s Polytone® HDPE is a durable, moisture resistant material that can endure fluctuating weather conditions. It also comes in a variety of color combinations, which help create a more vibrant play space. Polytone can also be used for basketball backboards.

Sleds & Toboggans

HDPE’s strength, durability, and abrasion resistance make it the ideal material for sleds and toboggans. Other materials may scratch, dent, or split due to the constant sliding, and wood may rot as it absorbs moisture from snow. HDPE can handle snow, rain, and constant sliding without sustaining major damage.

Swimming Pools

Swimming pools are expertly engineered to carefully regulate chemical levels to keep the water clean and protect swimmers. To accomplish this, pools utilize an array of chemical and moisture resistant plastics, most notably PVC, ABS, polypropylene, and UHMW-PE. Pool enclosures may also use acrylic or polycarbonate for lighter, more durable glazing.

Waterslides

Waterslides must be extremely smooth, non-absorbent, durable, and able to handle constant exposure to water and UV rays. HDPE satisfies all these criteria and is incredibly easy to thermoform. It is also available in an array of colors, allowing for near-limitless customization.

Other Applications
  • Bowling alleys (pin guides, kick plates, ball returns, and rollers)
  • Jukebox repair and reproduction (windows and housings)
