About POP Display Industry Plastics
Displays, Point of Purchase (POP) stands, and Trade Show Exhibits are a tried-and-true form of advertising. Whether on the showroom floor or inside a store, displays and exhibits allow potential customers to get an up-close look at the products they’re considering. Trade show booths and exhibits serve a similar purpose with an emphasis on attracting potential new customers by making a visual impression and showcasing a brand, product, or service. As the display and exhibit industry continues to evolve, it’s increasingly turning to innovative, more environmentally responsible options that can still achieve the high performance standards of traditional materials.
Reduced Shipping Costs Without Sacrificing Quality
Many factors go into determining which material is best for a display. As retail brands adopt more eco-friendly practices, sustainability is key. Lightweight materials reduce shipping costs, especially when a material must be transported to and from a trade show, and lower fuel usage results in a smaller carbon footprint. Since many displays have a limited lifecycle, recyclable materials are strongly preferred. But it’s important that these sustainable options are rigid and durable enough to hold up in a retail or trade show environment. Printability and consistent appearance are also critical, as companies have strict branding guidelines and logos and colors must look the same on each display.

Applications
3D Displays
3D displays are often designed for medium to long-term use, which requires a material that is durable enough to retain its physical properties as well as the visual fidelity of images printed onto it for an extended period. Materials such as Aluminum Composite Material (ACM), HDU (High-Density Urethane) Board, and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), are gaining popularity across the industry for their strength, printability, and sustainability. Expanded PVC can still be used under certain circumstances.
Announcement Panels
Wall-mounted boards, such as donor boards or announcement panels, can be framed using Aluminum Composite Material (ACM). ACM is made from rigid aluminum sheets and a polyethylene core, which maintains the rigidity of metal while reducing weight. ACM boards are lighter than fully metal boards, meaning they can hang for longer periods of time without damaging wall mounts or the wall itself.
Banner Media
Banners continue to be a dominant force in the display market. Ultraflex manufactures a diverse selection of PVC and PVC-free printable banner materials, with grades for various solvent types, UV resistance, latex, and an array of other options. Ultraflex products are known for their versatility, durability, and compatibility with various signage types, such as front- or back-lit.
Countertop Displays
Small display pieces hold brochures, sign-up sheets, coupons, and other promotional material. Despite their relatively unassuming appearance, these displays must be able to handle mild abrasions. Acrylic grades such as Plaskolite’s OPTIX® L were developed with both strength and aesthetics in mind. This lightweight and durable clear plastic resists scratching, chipping, and crazing (micro-cracking) while allowing adequate light transmission. In case of damage, acrylic can be easily recycled.
Directory Stands
Many directories stand on either a wood or metal base, which tend to wear away quickly and are often difficult to move. HDPE is becoming the preferred material for directory stands, as it is generally much lighter than traditional options and is less likely to cause damage or be damaged if tipped over. Polygrain® HDPE even looks like wood while providing all the benefits of plastic. More eloquent stands with a minimalist or modern feel and great durability can be made from Impact-Modified Acrylic or Polycarbonate.
Floor Graphics
Displays are no longer limited to standing structures. Specialized adhesive-backed media allows you to create graphic displays on your floors or walkways, with options designed for indoor foot traffic, outdoor traffic, weather resistance, and more.
Freestanding Displays
Freestanding displays can range from simple to intricate. The more complex the display, the more difficult it is to assemble and disassemble, and small pieces can be easily lost. You can simplify your displays with DGS BOARDers & Standees, which are designed to work with common substrates such as honeycomb paperboards, and foamboards for easy installation. DGS materials can reduce weight, costs and installation time, streamline storage, and showcase your sustainability efforts.
Interior Store Signage
Materials used for interior store signage must be tough and durable, but also easy to print on and able to preserve image fidelity. Primex’s Cor-X Corrugated Polypropylene provides these capabilities for medium-long term signage, while also accommodating vibrant colors.
Kiosks
Temporary kiosk set-ups are typically designed to be moved quickly from place to place. DGS BOARDers & Standees make simple, long-lasting kiosk displays that can be moved or disassembled with ease.
Retail Merchandising
Many storefronts and cashier counters showcase high-value products to consumers. Unlike display holders or basic signage, merchandise displays need to be made from material that can tolerate more strain. Impact-Modified Acrylic such as Plaskolite’s DURAPLEX® is a durable grade equipped to protect valuables and prevent intrusion.
Tradeshow Exhibits
Tradeshows are a proven way to introduce products into new markets. Displays, booths, and exhibits must be strong and sturdy enough to withstand high traffic areas, and durable enough to prevent damage during takedown or transportation. Their graphics must also accurately capture the colors and details of a brand and its products. Foam PVC is the go-to material for tradeshow displays because of its unique combination of strength, durability, and printability. While fabrics and textiles are gaining popularity for their lightweight and ease of transportation, while still offering vibrant graphics, including back-lit designs.
