Plastic Products for Agriculture Applications
Products for Efficiency, Yield, & Uptime
About Agriculture Industry Plastics
Plastics are so prevalent in agriculture that their use is sometimes referred to as “plasticulture.” Performance plastics provide one of the world’s largest industries with a wide range of benefits, including longer part life and reduced equipment maintenance, higher operational safety, greater yields, and improved efficiency. Plastic is much lighter than most traditional materials, which puts less strain on machines and requires less fuel, leading to valuable cost savings and a lower carbon footprint. To further sustainability efforts, most plastics are recyclable at the end of their lifecycle, and reprocessed grades, such as TIVAR® ECO UHMW-PE, can be used in certain applications.
From Bo-Peep Rods on large grape harvesters, to insulation panels on livestock transportation vehicles, performance plastics bring an array of efficiencies and enhanced properties to the agriculture and farming industry.
Polymershapes Offers Plastics Perfect for Agricultural needs from Irrigation Systems to Greenhouses
Plastic films such as polyethylene, sometimes referred to as plastic mulch, can be seen protecting crops, controlling moisture, and preventing weed growth. Irrigation systems may benefit from performance plastics’ ability to resist corrosion, prevent leaks, and encourage efficient water flow levels. One of the most common applications for performance plastics in the agriculture industry is the construction of greenhouses. Multiwall polycarbonate, such as LEXAN™ Thermoclear™, can help increase plant yield by controlling moisture, light, and UV levels, while protecting plants from temperature fluctuations, wind, hail, or even insects. Engineered plastics, such as acetal, nylon or UHMW-PE, are commonly used in machinery and equipment parts, increasing part-life, reducing maintenance downtime, increasing energy efficiency, and reducing operational noise, which benefits both humans and animals.

Applications
Bushings, Bearings, & Gears
As with many industries, nylon and acetal are the performance plastic of choice for many bushings, bearings, gears, or mechanical parts used in farming applications. Their noise abatement properties are especially helpful in situations where livestock might be startled by loud noises. Ertalon® 6PLA is a food-grade nylon offered by Mitsubishi Chemical Group when FDA or EU food compliance is required.
Cannabis Production
As cannabis is legalized in more and more states, new growing operations are on the rise. LEXAN Thermoclear multiwall polycarbonate is the top-of-the-line choice for greenhouses, as it is lightweight and easy to install while maximizing grow yield with its excellent thermal properties and high light transmission. PVC is available in interlocking liner panels for easy construction of warehouses or other buildings. Polymershapes can even offer fabricated polycarbonate transaction windows in standard or ballistic grades for added security.
Chute Liners
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) such as TIVAR 1000 by Mitsubishi Chemical Group is often used to line chutes that transport grain or other dry goods. Its abrasion resistance extends the use of the liner while its low frictional properties maximize material flow. Anti-static grades are available for additional safety in dusty environments.
Greenhouses
Replacing glass greenhouses with ones made from multiwall polycarbonate, such as LEXAN Thermoclear, is one of the most common ways the agriculture industry is optimizing production. Compared to traditional glass, polycarbonate’s properties can help increase plant yield by allowing precise light, temperature, and moisture control. Thermoclear’s proprietary coating reduces the contact angle of condensation droplets and decreases water dripping onto plants. Polycarbonate is also virtually shatterproof, even against hail or flying debris.
Harvesting Rods
Grape harvesters use special rods, often called Bo-Peep Rods because of their curved shape, to beat grapes from their vines. Extruded nylon 6/6 is the material of choice for this application due to its high strength and excellent wear resistance. Nylon rods have begun to be used in citrus harvesters as well.
Irrigation Systems
Because plastic doesn’t rust, it’s an excellent material to use in irrigation systems that move water from one place to another. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most commonly used plastic in pipes because of its water resistance, corrosion resistance, and strength. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is gaining popularity in irrigation systems because of its higher flexibility and lower cost.
Plastic Mulch
Polyethylene (PE) film is often used to temporarily cover newly planted crops to protect them from insects and animals, control moisture and temperature, and prevent weed growth. This application is sometimes referred to as plastic mulch.
Seals
Seals are found throughout farm equipment, including in bucket elevators, spray systems, and oil and fuel systems. Performance plastics make long lasting and cost-effective seals. Acetal offers strength, stiffness, and good wear properties for many simple seals. When high temperatures or harsh chemicals are involved, Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) offers advanced performance in extreme conditions.
Skid Plates & Wear Strips
Farming equipment is often outfitted with replaceable skid plates or wear strips to protect the rest of the machine from wear and tear from the environment. UHMW-PE is designed for such strenuous applications. Its excellent abrasion resistance can increase part-life and energy efficiency while reducing maintenance downtime and operational noise. Reprocessed grades such as Mitsubishi Chemical Group’s TIVAR ECO can be used for a sustainable solution.
Skylights & Partitions
Acrylic is a robust material with an array of features that make it very useful in skylights, windows, and see-through partitions in barns, sheds, kennels, poultry houses, and workshops. OPTIX® L cast acrylic combines high impact strength with excellent optical clarity. It’s also lightweight, chemical and scratch resistant, and easy to clean or dry, making it a fantastic option in many agricultural settings.
Tanks
When choosing a material for a tank, it must be strong, durable, easy to form or fabricate, and corrosion resistant. Depending on the tank’s contents, it may also need to be chemically resistant. HDPE is an excellent choice for most agricultural tanks, including water, chemical, and fuel, because it’s cost effective and chemically inert. It’s also available in an FDA grade if required.
Wall Cladding
PVC or PVC composite panels can be easily assembled in a variety of buildings for agricultural use, including paneling in livestock barns. HDPE is another option that is corrosion resistant, waterproof, and easy to clean.
