About Material Handling Industry Plastics
Everything that is manufactured must be moved around a production facility, and most items get packaged before they’re sold. With the rise of consumer online shopping, the material handling industry has expanded rapidly and continues to grow. Consumers expect packages to arrive on time and undamaged. Increased demand places strain on machines that move and package products, requiring faster operating speeds and minimized downtime. These new requirements give performance plastics an edge over the metals that were traditionally used in these applications. Plastic is significantly lighter than metal, enabling faster machine speeds while requiring less energy, which is good for sustainability efforts as well. Machines that use plastic parts against metal, versus metal-on-metal parts, are also quieter at higher speeds, improving the work environment for operators. Plastic is also more wear resistant than metal, especially with mated parts. This means machines can run longer before parts need to be replaced, which is especially critical when downtime can lead to backlogs and unhappy customers.
High Wear & Stress Resistant Products for Everyday Handling
Nylon and UHMW-PE are two performance plastics used frequently in packaging and conveying equipment. Cast nylon is an excellent material to increase the lifespan of mechanical components, particularly those that come under high stress. Nycast Nyloil is a self-lubricating brand from Cast Nylons that offers reduced maintenance time and costs. UHMW-PE is known for low-friction and high wear resistance, which makes it the material of choice for chute liners as well as chain guides, curves, guide rails, and wear strips. Mitsubishi Chemical Group offers several specialized grades of TIVAR™ UHMW-PE, with TIVAR Dryslide offering the best properties for package handling. For see-through applications, POLYVANTIS’s LEXAN™ 9034 polycarbonate offers unbeatable strength and optical clarity. And when boxes or dividers are needed for parts on a conveyor belt, Primex’s Cor-X® corrugated twin wall polypropylene is durable and easy to recycle at the end of its lifecycle.
High Performance & Light Weight for Affordable Industrial Use
Performance plastics help move materials quickly and cost-effectively. Combining light weight and high performance, plastics allow machines to run faster and more fuel-efficiently while extending part life, which means less downtime when every minute is critical. They even reduce noise pollution for a more pleasant work environment. Applications
Bearings & Bushings
Bearings and bushings assist rotation and reduce friction in a variety of machines. Polyurethane is often the material of choice for these parts in conveyors and material handling systems because it’s extremely durable and reliable even at high temperatures, resulting in long lasting parts that improve traction while reducing noise and vibration. Nylon and acetal also have the strength, durability, tensile strength, and noise abatement properties to make great bushings and bearings.
Conveyor Components
TIVAR 1000 UHMW-PE is often the material of choice for mechanical conveyor components that face high levels of wear, such as chain guides, curves, guide strips, edge strips and profiles, and wear pads and strips. Specialty grades, including ESD, are available depending on your application requirements. TIVAR HPV provides even better wear resistance from the most demanding production environments, such as curves.
Chute Liners
Chute liners must keep material flowing while protecting the conveyor itself from wear. For package handling, TIVAR Dryslide UHMW-PE is self-lubricating and offers the lowest coefficient of friction of any TIVAR product, and its enhanced anti-static properties makes it safe to use in dry, dusty, or dirty environments. TIVAR Dryslide prevents package jams and damage, slow package throughput, conveyor overload and shutdowns, and hazardous safety conditions, all without the need of spray or wax chute lubrication. Polymershapes can help you design and install TIVAR liners and also offers prefab kits.
Dunnage
Boxes and dividers are needed to separate parts on an assembly line, especially in the auto industry. Cor-X twin wall polypropylene is sturdy, easy to fabricate, and recyclable, making it an excellent choice for reusable packaging.
Gaskets
Gaskets create seals in machinery. Polyurethane is an excellent gasket material because of its high abrasion resistance and ability to resist deformation under pressure, even at high temperatures.
Machine Guards
Machine guards protect operators by covering potentially dangerous equipment. LEXAN 9034 polycarbonate offers virtually unbreakable strength with crystal clear transparency to allow you to safely observe machine operation from a distance. It’s also flame retardant and temperature resistant.
Rollers
Plastic conveyor rollers are lightweight and durable, capable of withstanding the constant weight and pressure of your payload as it works its way down the line. Both nylon and UHMW-PE are excellent choices for conveyor rollers. Polyurethane can offer increased performance when necessary, as well as significant noise reduction.
Sight Glasses
Sight glasses provide a see-through window to visually inspect material as it flows through a pipe. LEXAN 9304 polycarbonate offers high strength and optical clarity.
Sheaves & Pulleys
Pulleys must bear a lot of weight under heavy tension. Though metals are commonly used for pulley wheels and sheaves, nylon is lighter and performs well in high tension applications. Nyoil is a self-lubricating grade that doesn’t require additional lubrication.
Sprockets
Plastic conveyor sprockets keep the line moving and improve machine performance, with reduced wear over time compared to metals. Nyoil is a self-lubricating nylon that offers stiffness, strength, and reduced maintenance requirements.
Star Wheels
Star wheels orient materials and hold them in place as they move down a conveyor. UHMW-PE is often the plastic of choice due to its low friction and excellent wear properties. Acetal and Nylon are also excellent choices for critical applications.
Windows
See-through plastic can replace glass in any material handling window application, offering additional strength at a fraction of the weight. Acrylic is a cost-effective solution that is easy to polish if scratched, while polycarbonate offers additional strength.
Other Applications
- Bearing cages
- Cams and cam followers
