About Security Industry Plastics
In today’s world, security is more important than ever. The use of plastics to provide physical protection to create a safe and secure environment has increased significantly over the past few decades, particularly in glazing applications for banks, schools, and government buildings. See through plastics like polycarbonate and acrylic are lighter yet more impact resistant than glass, offering superior protection plus an easier fabrication and installation process. Plastics don’t shatter like glass, and they are available in a range of ballistic and non-ballistic grades to match the amount of protection needed for a specific application.
Industry Leading Products for Complete Protection
Virtually unbreakable LEXAN™ polycarbonate is an ideal solution for smash and grab protection, enhancing the security of windows and doors. LEXAN MARGARD™ ups the protection with a hard coating that helps improve safety as well as abrasion and graffiti resistance. In the most dangerous environments, LEXGARD® ballistic grade laminated polycarbonate can provide protection to UL Standard 752.

Applications
Armored & VIP Vehicle Glazing
Armored vehicle windows and windshields must be able to resist bullets and blasts without sacrificing driver visibility. LEXAN offers a portfolio of laminated ballistic grade polycarbonate engineered for such applications, such as MARGARD HLG5 or MARGARD HLG10.
Bullet Resistant Glazing
LEXAN offers two, three, and four-ply ballistic grade polycarbonate laminates for security protection. While all provide bullet, blast, impact, and wind resistance, check the specs of each product to determine the level of ballistic protection according to UL Standard 752.
Counterline Systems
Counterline systems, or “bandit barriers,” create a physical barrier between customers and employees in banks, stores, and other businesses. In addition to deterring theft and violent attacks, these barriers must also look aesthetically pleasing without muffling sound. Depending on expected threat level, counterline systems may be made of ballistic or non-ballistic acrylic or polycarbonate.
Forced Entry Glazing
Insulgard offers a line of FORCEPROTECT polycarbonate laminate glazing products that have been designed and tested to prevent forced entry into banks, stores, or government facilities by resisting blunt force, chemical, and thermal attacks.
Prison & Detention Center Glazing
Prisons require strong yet transparent materials for cell doors, windows, and visitation areas. Polycarbonate laminates, such as those from Insulgard’s FORCEPROTECT line, protect against blunt force or ballistic attacks while maintaining visibility.
Riot Shields
Riot shields must balance strength with weight as they protect police or the military from physical attack. Modern riot shields are commonly made from polycarbonate because it’s lightweight, transparent, and very impact resistant. Ballistic and non-ballistic grades are available.
Safety Goggles
Polycarbonate is 250x more impact resistant than glass and 10x more impact resistant than other transparent plastics, making it an excellent choice for safety goggle lens. Whereas glass and other plastics are likely to crack or even shatter if hit with a flying object, polycarbonate’s softness allows it to absorb most impacts without damage. Polycarbonate also blocks UV rays, providing additional eye protection, all while being lightweight and comfortable for the wearer.
Transaction Windows
Polymershapes offers ready to install transaction windows made from ballistic and non-ballistic grade acrylic or polycarbonate. They can be custom built to fit your opening and include package exchange units and voice rails for natural voice transmission.
Wind & Impact Resistant Glazing
Polycarbonate is 250x more impact resistant than glass, making it an ideal material for windows that can stand up to even the most extreme and dangerous weather. Insulgard’s STORMDEFEND window system has been certified for use in hurricane or tornado storm shelters encountering winds up to 250 mph.
