About Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW)

UHMW, also known as UHMW-PE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene), is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic material, with a continuous use temperature range of up to 180° F (82° C). It is categorized as an engineering material, and offers a unique combination of wear and corrosion resistance, a low-friction surface, and high impact strength.

UHMW exhibits very low moisture absorption, and retains key physical properties at temperatures as low as minus-22° F (minus-30° C). It offers very good electrical insulating properties, moderate mechanical strength and stiffness, and excellent machinability. It is an excellent general-purpose material which offers performance properties that make it effective in a tremendous range of applications, particularly food handling solutions, conveyance mechanisms and material handling, and packaging solutions where wear resistance and durability are crucial. Plus, UHMW meets a wide range of regulatory compliance standards, including 3-A Dairy, ASTM/Mil-Spec, FDA, UL-94 Flame Class, and USDA.

Polymershapes proudly offers UHMW from industry-leading manufacturers, including Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials (formerly Quadrant EPP), makers of Tivar®. We can meet your UHMW needs in a variety of shapes and sizes, including sheet, rod, and tube. We can also provide you with various grades of this versatile material, including bearing grade, ceramic filled, FDA, virgin, glass filled, reprocessed, oil filled, static dissipative, UV resistant, flame retardant, high temperature, and metal detectable. Available colors include natural, black, blue and green.

Applications & Industries

Conveying Automation

Conveying Automation

Everything that is manufactured must be moved around a production facility, and most items get packaged before they’re sold. With the rise of consumer online shopping, the material handling industry has expanded rapidly and continues to grow, relying on conveying systems and automation.

Processors & Job Shops

Processors & Job Shops

Many industries are switching from traditional materials like metals to engineering plastics for key mechanical applications. Plastics are significantly lighter than metals and offer several performance benefits.

Mining

Mining

Operating environments in mining industries are abrasive, noisy and generally tough on materials. A wide range of engineering plastics, such as Nylon, UHMW, HDPE, and many more, are used for a variety of applications in the mining industry.

Agriculture

Agriculture

Plastics are so prevalent in agriculture that their use is sometimes referred to as “plasticulture.” Performance plastics provide one of the world’s largest industries with a wide range of benefits, including longer part life and reduced equipment maintenance, higher operational safety, greater yields, and improved efficiency.

Marine

Marine

The marine industry requires materials that can withstand demanding conditions such as harsh saltwater and intense sunlight. While plywood, metal, and laminates are commonplace in the marine industry, marine-grade performance plastics are a lightweight alternative specifically developed to address common industry struggles.
